When I was traveling for Europe in each train station, there was a recommendation saying be aware of the pick pockets. I was worry because I was alone, far away from my home and in a country was neither Spanish nor English were spoken. Therefore, I bought a belly bag in order to secure mi personal stuff such as passport, money and credit card with this bag I felt secure and I enjoyed my trip. But now that I am leaving in a secure place (Miami?) and I don’t need my belly bag I am asking if my credit card information is secure? I don’t think so, because with the internet there is a new type of theft that I name “online pick pocket”. They hack and loot a corporate server in order to obtain the information of buyers’ credit cards, in others words they put their hands inside the pocket of big corporations who have the credit card information.
People think that if they don’t use credit card on the internet they will be safe that’s not true because now all the systems are connected to the internet and the information is available in any part of the world. Remember when you use your credit card in a retail store that information is available for the online pick pockets. Even thought pick pockets exist and will exist; according with Kennneth Laudon Book (E-Commerce 2010) stolen credit card information is around 1.4% of the all online card transactions. For me this percentage will be reduced or at least will be kept in the same level, the main reason is the technology and tools available to protect the internet communications. These tools are:
Encryption
Firewall
Authentication , and others.
In my opinion, you should feel safe because internet has its own belly bag. So don’t worry and keep buying stuff in amazon, ebay, or other reliable websites or paying your bills or making online transactions. Finally, I recommend you to buy advertising in this blog I certify that is a secure place.

I like the way you call the action "Online Pick pockets"... sounds funny, but it gives the right image -stealing form your pockets (almost).
ReplyDeleteSecurity has been a big issue since the inception of computer networks (even before the internet as we know it) and I don't think it will slow down. As more people and companies rely more on technology hackers will find things to get. I believe that CC, albeit a top target, might not be the most desirable piece of data that could be stolen. I think in the future stealing identities will be a bigger issue, not just for credit cards, but who knows someone might want to steal your dna info (if stored somewhere) or modify your immigration documents and what not.
Data is and will always be very valuable and I don't think one could be safe enough. I tend to think that hackers are always one step ahead of security experts, but hopefully I'm wrong.
The Internet is a very important resource for users. Nowadays people can do all kinds of transactions online, buy, sell, trade, etc. However, one has to be careful when using credit cards in websites. Displaying personal information over the Internet can be dangerous. There have been many cases of identity theft and also card information is taken to buy all kinds of things, all over the world. A person may be charged with something in a totally different place at any time. Consumers should educate themselves on this issue. Whenever using the Internet to buy things/services, the security policies should be checked to prevent frauds. Be careful!
ReplyDeleteOnline pick pockets are a serious concern to anyone making a purchase anywhere. I was surprised to hear that your credit card information is exposed even when you make a purchase at a retail location because it is store on the company's servers. It does make sense after you think about it, and in fact there has been many cases of hackers breaking into steal credit card numbers and social security numbers as well.
ReplyDeleteUsing your credit card for fraudulent charges is only the tip of the ice berg however. There are thousands of individuals that go to work 9 to 5 and try and scam people in a number of ways. In fact, my former supervisor from a credit card processing company told me that Jamaica is notorious for this as the laws that govern the island, because it used to be a British Island, makes going after these types of scum almost impossible. You can find many scams on craigslist even that offer to send you a check for more than the amount, so that you can cut them a check for the difference and get shafted on the entire deal.
The worst part however, is something which my neighbor just experienced. Apparently, some underground hacker group working our of Dade County managed to get a hold of her personal information through facebook and accessed her email, bank accounts, and credit cards. They practically wiped her out, changed her address so that they can obtain further use of her accounts, and did everything they pleased until she caught on. According the the police, Bank of America was one of the easiest accounts you can hack into and was very common in this city. Shortly after, she found herself making endless phone calls to her bank, all her credit cards, the three different credit reporting agencies to make sure that this nightmare won't damage the credit she's worked so hard to built over the years.
According with,Mercatory Advisory Group
ReplyDelete, the cost of card fraud in 2008 were 7 cents per 100 dollars worth of transactions. Due to the high volume of transactions this translates to billions of dollars.
One of the most famous cases of unauthorized computer systems intrusion was when TJX announced that the number of affected customers had reached about 45.7 million
